Radical Prostatectomy

Radical prostatectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the entire prostate gland along with surrounding tissues in cases of localized prostate cancer. The prostate gland, located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum, plays a role in producing seminal fluid. Radical prostatectomy aims to completely remove the cancerous tissue while preserving urinary continence and sexual function as much as possible.

There are different approaches to performing radical prostatectomy, including open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and robotic-assisted surgery. Robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) has gained popularity due to its advantages of improved precision, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times compared to traditional open surgery.

During the procedure, the surgeon carefully removes the prostate gland and nearby lymph nodes if cancer has spread to these areas. Preservation of surrounding nerves that control urinary and sexual function is a priority to minimize the risk of complications such as erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence.
