URSL stands for Ureterorenoscopy (URS) with Laser Lithotripsy. It is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat stones in the upper urinary tract, specifically in the kidney and ureter. During URSL, a ureteroscopeโa thin, flexible tube with a camera at its tipโis inserted through the urethra, bladder, and up into the ureter or kidney where the stone is located. Once the stone is visualized, a laser fiber is used through the ureteroscope to break the stone into smaller fragments. These smaller pieces can then either be naturally passed through urine or removed with a basket-like device. URSL is preferred for its precision in targeting stones, minimal invasiveness, and shorter recovery times compared to traditional surgery. It is typically performed under general anesthesia or sedation and may require a short hospital stay depending on the size and location of the stones being treated.
